(e)Voting for people with disabilities and the aging

Why the article is helpful

  • Understand barriers to voting for voters with disabilities and people of older age
  • Measured voter satisfaction with the voting process
  • Improved outreach, awareness, and additional research could provide resolution to these issues

Although electronic voting has increased inclusiveness and representation, the need to fully understand the barriers to voting became more apparent for voters with disabilities and people of older age. Barriers included physical factors, cultural, social, awareness related factors, poll worker perception, and misunderstanding of the limitations of disability-related conditions. The authors measured voter satisfaction with the voting process, using manual and electronic voting, and included voters with and without disabilities, and the aging, to help assess and identify potential issues, barriers and opportunities that may impede accessibility to the voting process. Based on the findings, improved outreach, awareness, and additional research could provide resolution to these issues.
